make war on your worst attributes

A friend playfully asked me to take an online “How evil are you?” test and he was surprised when my result was ‘moderately nefarious’.

“But you’re the nicest person I know,” he said.

“But I’m also a Scorpio.” I explained that I’m quite a nasty person and hate that aspect of myself and its impact on other people. So I constantly work to reel it in. To give it as little air as possible. Then, he gave the best reply. I don’t know if it’s a quote. I haven’t asked him yet and haven’t been able to find a reference to it online, but here it is:

Make war on your worst attributes like they are your worst enemy, because they are.

I’m not a fan of the war analogy but I think I understand his point and agree.

My friend’s comment is timely. I’ve been mentally preparing myself to do what I need to do to get rid of excess weight. I have to fight my self-indulgence which uses junk food as an emotional balm. It wouldn’t be a problem if I just munched on a bag of spinach when I was “hungry”. But that’s not what I do. That’s why this enemy is tricky. It looks a lot like a good friend.

This is one war I dread.
